Jarren's Adventure

These past few days have been an adventure for Jarren. To fill you in about a week ago Jarren had started to complain of a tooth ache. I assumed that it was a cavity and since he will be seeing the dentist mid-June I would have it looked at then. Jarren has a pretty high pain tolerance and only mentioned the tooth ache a few times, So I was not aware how bad it really was. On Tuesday morning May 27 Jarren woke with a slightly swollen cheek. I knew then that he was showing signs of an abscess tooth. I called our dentist who's office is closed until June 3rd. I then called the on call doctor who prescribed Jarren an anti-biotic for the infection. The doctor told us to call and make an appointment for Wednesday May 28. Well the 28th was Jarren's Kindergarten field trip to the Zoo. My plan was to make the appointment in the afternoon when he got home. Boy, was I wrong. Wednesday morning Jarren woke up with his face double in size , eye and upper lip all swollen. I called the doctor and he advised that Jarren needed to be seen. Needless to say Jarren did not get to go on his field trip. He was very sad and we both cried about it. I promised him that once we got the tooth and infection taken care of that I would take him to the Zoo on Saturday.
to get the tooth out. He said that Once we saw the doctor he advise that the infection was so bad that he could not numb JarrenJarren needed an anti-biotic by IV before they could get to the tooth out. The Doctor called up to Primary Children's Hospital to advise what we would need once we got there. We sat in the ER for four hours waiting for a room. Once we were settled in the room the nurse got the IV started, which took three nurses to get the IV in. Shortly after that the hospital dentist came in and pulled the tooth. Jarren had to stay overnight to be sure he was responding to the meds and that the infection was clearing up. The concern was if not taken care of, it could have gone into the blood stream which would not have been good. Jarren was released from the hospital on Thursday 29. I am so glad that we live where there is a hospital for children. They really know how to make them smile and feel good under poor situations. The doctors and nurses said that they have not seen an abscess progress this fast or be as bad as Jarren's was. Jarren is doing very well now and will be going to the Zoo tomorrow. So stay tuned for that adventure. There are pictures below of Jarren in the hospital and of the next day at home.
Jarren right after getting the IV put in. Even though it took three nurses to put in the IV, Jarren was handling everything very well.
Jarren trying to open his mouth after getting the tooth pulled.
There is the tooth! You can not see it very well, but the doc said that it had a really big infection pocket on it. Jarren will need to go back to the dentist for a spacer since this tooth was not suppose to come out until about age 9.
Jarren still a little swollen , but doing much better. He was on his way out to school.
Here you can tell how much the swelling has come down. Since this picture was taken the swelling has come down even more. This is one experience Jarren will never forget. I know will not forget it!!

Although I am so sad that Jarren had to go through all that, I am glad my kids got to see him swollen. I remind them about it and they are off to brush their teeth! You're a trooper Jarren!
